Peppermint Plaza was lit wall to wall Wednesday night as the official Christmas in July celebration brought music, lanterns, summer sweets, civic ceremony and one unexpected inter-realm entrance to the heart of the village.
The annual midsummer celebration opened beneath strings of frost-glass bulbs and red-and-green pennants that moved lightly in the evening air, despite a formal advisory from the Decorating Office asking all pennants to “show restraint near the cocoa tents.”
They did not.
Families filled the plaza early, spreading picnic blankets along the cobblestones while vendors passed trays of chilled peppermint pastries, sugared fruit cups and snowflake fritters dusted with lemon glaze. Children carried paper lanterns shaped like tiny sleighs. Several adults carried three.
No citations were issued.
Santa Welcomes The Crowd
Santa Claus took the main stage shortly after sunset, greeted by a cheer that rolled from the cocoa stands to the far edge of the parade route.
Wearing a summer-weight red coat and boots polished to a ceremonial shine, Santa delivered the evening’s keynote from beneath the Plaza Bell, where the crowd had gathered shoulder to shoulder in the warm lantern glow.
“Christmas in July reminds us that the season is not only a date on the calendar,” Santa said. “It is a promise we begin keeping long before December. Tonight, we celebrate the light ahead, the work ahead and the joy we are trusted to carry.”
The remarks were met with applause, bell-ringing and one elf in the front row quietly mouthing, “That’s going on the banner.”
Mrs. Claus stood beside Santa during the address and later joined him in lighting the ceremonial midsummer wreath, a ring of evergreen, ribbon and tiny bottled auroras that brightened the plaza without requiring Maintenance.
Maintenance was seen nearby anyway.
Music, Lanterns And A Plaza In Motion
Entertainment began with the Peppermint Plaza Children’s Choir, whose opening number was briefly delayed when two lanterns drifted above the alto section and had to be negotiated down.
The Sleighport Brass & Landing Light Ensemble followed with a bright, brassy set that turned the central square into something close to a parade before the parade had technically begun. Their finale featured a synchronized sparkle burst, three drumrolls and a trumpet solo described by one attendee as “festive enough to require paperwork.”
Later in the evening, the Midsummer Ribbon Dancers moved through the plaza carrying long red, white and gold streamers that curled above the crowd in the shape of sleigh trails. The performance ended at the fountain, where the ribbons settled neatly around the base.
Officials confirmed the fountain had rehearsed.
Food tents stayed busy throughout the night. Pip N. Twinkleberry’s recommended summer menu was well represented, including frostfire street corn, chilled cocoa floats, berry snowdrift cups and gingerbread icebox bars.
The Two Marshmallow Rule remained in effect at all cocoa stations.
Compliance was mixed but spirited.
Tooth Fairy Realm Makes An Unannounced Entrance
The evening’s biggest surprise came just after 8 p.m., when the north lantern arch shimmered silver and a delegation from the Tooth Fairy Realm stepped into Peppermint Plaza without appearing on the printed program.
The group was led by Celestina Flosswyn, Tooth Fairy Liaison to Interdimensional Affairs, who arrived in a moonlit cloak with a small honor guard from the Molarian Spire. The delegation carried a polished enamel case that chimed softly as it crossed the plaza.
The crowd went quiet for approximately four seconds.
Then someone shouted, “Is that the Tooth Fairy Council?” and the applause began.
Flosswyn presented Santa with the First Sparkle Ledger, a ceremonial calendar meant to coordinate major North Pole and Tooth Realm events after last year’s scheduling discussions under the Sparkle Accord.
“The Sparkle Accord opened the door,” Flosswyn said. “Tonight, we step through it as friends, neighbors and keepers of several very complicated calendars.”
Santa accepted the ledger with a bow and thanked the delegation for “bringing order, goodwill and excellent timing.”
Permit officials later confirmed the delegation’s arrival had not been scheduled, but had also not technically violated any parade boundaries.
This remains the sort of sentence officials prefer.
A Season Begins In The Glow
Santa closed the night with the announcement that the Christmas season preparation cycle will formally begin Thursday morning under the theme “First Light Forward.”
The theme, according to the Claus Communications Council, will guide the first phase of seasonal readiness across the village, from Workshop Quarter checklists to Sleighport route planning to public lantern displays in Peppermint Plaza.
The announcement drew another round of cheers, though the loudest response came when Santa confirmed that the plaza’s midsummer wreath will remain lit through the first week of preparation.
A small group of children immediately began chanting for it to stay up until December.
Their legal position is unclear.
As the celebration wound down, families lingered under the lanterns while the brass ensemble played one final soft reprise near the fountain. The Tooth Fairy delegation remained for cocoa. Santa worked the edge of the crowd, shaking hands, accepting drawings and pretending not to see a second marshmallow become a third.
By press time, Peppermint Plaza had quieted, the midsummer wreath was still glowing and the first Workshop Quarter readiness bell was already scheduled.
The celebration was over.
The season had heard its name.
